Awaken! from jadedness

23 Jan 2013

Today on my mid-morning walk by the Lam Tsuen River in Tai Po, I saw scores of fish jumping up into the air and gracefully diving back into the waters on their side, each fish doing a few jumps. It was as though they were enjoying themselves! You could almost hear the symphony of music following each fish, as a ripple of water is formed with each dive. A beautiful sight to behold! They must be celebrating something. Maybe a thanksgiving gesture to the Divine for life, for another new day, for the fresh air and abundant food they share with other living things in the vast, deep seas and oceans.

Then came the herons, flying so gracefully, with their thin legs stretched straight behind them. I noticed there were adolescent herons as well, perhaps learning from their mothers. Yes, they know there is food! As I watched, I could see some of the herons flying close to the waters and swooping in, probably making a catch and flying off to the rocky coastline. I couldn't see the catch in action; I may have to get a binoculars next time.

Such is the web of life. But the fish were not perturbed. They continue to dance and jump, some more acrobatic than others; I couldn't help admiring their free nature. Living in the moment. I would have cowed when I sense danger near...but then I would have missed the moment of perfect joy when time and tide stimulate my natural urge to dance and enjoy life; just as these fishes do in the waters today.
